Consistency is difficult for an author, no matter how many books they have written or whether they are self-published or backed by the largest of publishing houses. I have those authors that I usually love, that I most often love, that I mark books as “to read” and wait for them to be on sale or in the library, as I know I will enjoy them when I get to read them.

And then I have Melanie Harlow. She ranks right up there with Nora Roberts, Amanda Quick (Jayne Ann Krentz) and Judith McNaught. These aren’t authors I read when they are available, they are the ones I buy at full price, that I re-read, that I know will be a book I am going to be sad to finish.

I have loved all Melanie Harlow has written, admittedly some more than others. And I am a harsh critic. I never mark her books as “to read” I just pre-order them and read them immediately. And I love them. I am sad to see them end, I tell everyone I know about them while anxiously awaiting the next one. I will gladly, and have, recommended every book of Melanie Harlow’s to other readers.

Miles and Natalie. What can I say? “Almost” comes to mind, because that is their word. But nothing more on that, you will just have to read it to find out about this on your own. And, I highly recommend that you buy it. Just click “buy” already. You won’t regret it.
There was nothing “almost” about their story and nothing was missing. Miles was a wonderful combination of strong hero and loving leading man. He had a sense of humor, tattoos, and a love for Natalie that made you laugh and love with him. Natalie is a strong woman who knows what she wants, but also has a vulnerability that draws you to her, makes you like her, and encourages you to cheer with her.
The story is a friends to lovers romance, with glimpses into the friendship between the 2, slowly revealing that Miles had feelings for Natalie that he admitted. The reader also learns that Natalie was a little later to admitting that she was attracted to Miles.

The drama of the story is dealt with well. Dan, the boyfriend at the beginning of the story, is a cheater. You kind of already knew this from “Some Sort of Happy” and Natalie figures it out quickly. It is important to being able to like and relate to both Miles and Natalie that their relationship begins after the end of Natalie and Dan, which it does. This is important to Miles and the presence of Dan is the main reason he never seriously pursued Natalie, which makes the reader not only instantly feel for Miles, but also respect him. He is a good guy.
There is no push and pull with Natalie, Miles and Dan. No real temptation on Natalie’s part to go back to Dan, which I was expecting, and was pleasantly surprised wasn’t there. She wasn’t tempted by her past, she wanted to move forward to her new life. This gave credibility to the story. It is also what allows Miles to believe that she really does want to be with him and to get past the “but you are with Dan” reality that has held him back from pursuing the relationship.

There was another twist that I didn’t see coming, but looking back on it, there were enough hints about where the story was going that, when it gets there, you are willing to go with the characters and believe their motivations and actions. This is good writing…when an author manages to surprise you because you never went there in your mind, yet leaves the reader feeling “Oh wait, I didn’t see it right away, but I can see the build-up to this looking back on the story”. All I am saying on this, as it is just too much of a spoiler, even with the spoiler warning.

The story changes Miles into someone who wants what he had never really considered, well, except for with Natalie. And, it changes Natalie into someone who learns you can still have it all, even if “all” doesn’t look like you thought it would. And it leaves them in the most perfect of places.

First, let me say that Melanie Harlow can write one STEAMY book! Very sexy and witty. Love the childhood friends to lovers story line. While I liked the book in general, I felt like it was forced as it rolled towards the end. One minute, Miles is spouting his man-whore free-as-the-wind philosophy, then the next page he had done a complete 180 and was ready to be a husband and father. I would have thought Natalie would have taken more time to figure herself out as a person after ending a 10 year monogamous relationship. I loved Miles and Natalie together, don't get me wrong. But it felt like it was sex 24/7 (again, super hot and not complaining) but no substance. They has a LOT issues to work through. Like where to live and Miles was going to do for a job if he couldn't be the male Carrie Bradshaw anymore. It was like the book ended abruptly, the two main characters miraculously overcame their issues and two very different personalities and lifestyles came together, and it was all hunky dory. I get it, it's a romance novel, but I feel like Harlow is better than this. Very unsatisfying epilogue. It was all about her sister getting married. Uh, she has her own book. I wanted to see Miles and Natalie and where their little family ended up. It was good, but could have been better.
Okay, let me start with a couple things.

First I LOVED that this took place in Michigan, being a Detroit girl myself. And also, having lived in Traverse City for a short time, where Natalie is from. It was awesome seeing a glimpse of Detroit and having positive light shine on it for once. Every romance takes place in new york, Chicago, or LA and it gets tiring. Detroit has a lot to offer. I've been to the Sugar House, cork town, midtown, up and down Woodward. It's a great place, people. Seriously go check it out.

Second, I did not read the first novel. I also don't believe I've ever read anything by this author before.

Positives Loved the characters. They have flaws, it made them real. I hate books with perfect people. I felt annoyed with them a few times, but I want that. I loved Natalie's independence. I loved that Miles wasn't some rich guy just trying to buy her affection. I don't like novels with billionaires just buying the love of the woman. That is not romance to me. This story is sweet, sexy, and pulls you in.

Negatives The editing. The typos got annoying. The writing is done well and flows easy, but the inner monologues got tiring too. They both asked themselves a million freaking questions. Way over the top.

Miles immaturity. I wanted to scream, "Grow up!". I get that he's 27, but I'm 27 and I know lots of other 27 year olds and none of them only have plastic silverware. And thinking that Natalie would still sleep with him after giving another girl his number in front of her....no. And honestly, Natalie was just as immature, but in a different way. She thought she knew everything. She didn't. I don't want to give anything away, but she really needed to get her head out of her butt and give Miles a shot. She was so consumed with how her life was planned and that Miles didn't live the same way as her, that it clouded what was right in front of her. I understood her feelings, but it did get frustrating. Her "plan" blinded her so much that she thought Dan was a great boyfriend...yuck.

This novel is worth the read. It's different, sweet, steamy (hehe), and relatable. I will definitely be reading more from this author
