A comedy, a tragedy. Threadgill Pickett, veteran of the Civil War, breaks out from an Alabama old folks home and starts a quest northward to kill the last living Union Soldier—this to avenge his twin brother, who was needlessly killed by Union soldiers, outside of any conflict. On his journey, Threadgill encounters two brothers building a time machine, a trio of Ku Kluxers, a man collecting raccoons that turn out to be rabid, a wannabe country singer, and a truck-driving woman to make men stand in awe. He also encounters a Utopian society of blacks and whites who share family, food, love, and grief.

This was a quality read, but I did not really get interested in the progress of the story until about Chapter 20. After that, it became a "page turner." I am from Alabama and found the descriptive passages wonderful. Is allegory a requirement for "southern literature"? It got a bit thick at times and I am sure that there are many hidden meanings in the events and characters found along the way.The final chapter was not satisfying to me, though. Maybe because I was not ready for the story to end, but the premise presented in the last chapter seemed too familiar and gimmicky. I choose to end the novel at the next-to-last chapter or write a better ending in my head.

Pickett Charge edition by Charles McNair Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Ended abruptly!
Writer has an interesting slant with his descriptions. Hilarious at times. Character development is interesting and humorous. The flashbacks are aggravating, but necessary. Although comedic, there is a lot of pathos in the book.
I loved the imagination and adventures and the romp through recent and not so recent history. Charles takes intelligent readers somewhere they have never been before. EXCELLENT
As with all his works, Charles' writing knows no creative bounds; Pickett's Charge is another cleverly realized story, and to-boot, what a story it is. Charles McNair never fails to entertain and engage this reader.
This was a great novel.
The reader follows the main character, Threadgill, on a journey of revenge in which he meets more than a dozen fellow travelers on the road. These characters are so well-written, so ALIVE, that they jump right off the page. You'll love Threadgill, you'll love his story, and you'll love all the others who populate the pages of Pickett's Charge.
I highly recommend this beautifully-written and imaginative piece of fiction by Charles McNair.
The battle between the North and South rages on in this swashbuckling allegory. A triumph of wit and imagination. Not to be missed.
McNair's first novel, Land O' Goshen, was one of the most original works of American fiction I have ever read. Pickett's Charge, though different, is equally compelling. Twenty years after his first book, Pickett's Charge, not surprisingly, reflects McNair's maturity and development, not only as an incredibly creative story teller, but also as an observer of and commentator on the human condition.
