This book pulled me in from the first page and I just fell in love with it the more I read...there are no mermaids in this one and it's SUCH a refreshing perspective on ocean life. You will see the ocean creatures through Tessa's eyes and experience an amazing journey as she learns about a whole new kingdom under the sea! My fave characters were the sea lions, Mimi and Lizzy. They are adorable, feisty, super intelligent, loyal, and had me cracking up more than once! Also loved sea turtle Ka, Sid the octopuss, and Rico the sea horse. My heart fell in love with the characters, both people and creatures, as Tessa fights to learn the truth and help the kingdom all the while finding out her destiny in the midst of it. Fascinating book and a quick read, easily worth more than 5 stars, one of my fave reads of 2014! Now I gotta get Book 2!

My one granddaughter is a very reluctant reader and a local library was having a sale where I picked up a copy of this book somebody had donated. Recognizing the author's name was one reason to pick it up - the blurb was another. I gave it to my granddaughter and hoped it wouldn't be relegated to the dark recesses of under the bed. Imagine my surprise when a few days later she phoned to let me know how much she enjoyed the story. She had completely finished the book. She started to tell me all about the book and how much she enjoyed it. Thank you, Tara, for showing my granddaughter that there are books available she will enjoy reading. Now I know what kind of books to get her in the future. If you have a reluctant reader, this might just be the trick to getting the child to enjoy reading.
It's about a girl who is taken to the bottom of the ocean where she learns about her destiny. It is a lot of fun plus its a love story.
I loved this book! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes adventure and romance, and craves something spiritual. It is a unique and wonderful book!!
Ms. Fairfield gives us an interesting YA Christian fantasy-- under the sea. Tessa’s life changes when she is taken to this new world. She accepts this with ease, and only wants to reassure her family she is OK. There are interactions with sharks, squid, dolphins, sea lion, sea horses and more. There is, also, Hawaiian lore and language which add depth to the story. Descriptions take the reader into the story, along with the budding new relationships, as Tessa grows and learns.
I read Makai Queen as my "falling asleep" read. Some nights I rushed bedtime just so I could start reading.I enjoyed the characters both the good guys and the villains, not that all the villains were people! This is a good read for anyone with imagination and curiosity. The storyline is enhanced with the message of The Creator and finding one's true purpose and love.
Imagine yourself kidnapped and dragged into an undersea world filled with danger and romance. The story is a bit like the "Little Mermaid" with lessons about love, life, jealousy, and faith all wrapped in seaweed. If you enjoy a "clean" Fantasy/Romance with imagination and lessons about forgiveness and faith, this is the book for you. Tessa lost her parents and chaffed under the control of her sister until she nearly lost it all. Can she discover her true love and save Makai in the process? There's danger and evil caused by jealousy. Tessa must navigate underwater to find her life's true course.
Makai Queen was a bit of a departure from my normal reads because it included a lot more romance (very cleanly depicted and sweetly developed) than I usually go for, but it also had the marvelous intrigue of life in a Hawaiian underwater world, mystic creatures and shape-shifters, and one of the age-old battles of time learning to forgive. The author handled several things very well descriptions of amazing architecture and sea life, the dialects of the island characters, and the interweaving of spiritual themes with action and adventure. All of those things typically trip novice writers up, but obviously we're not reading a novice here.

I'm not one to give spoilers, so I won't go into much plot detail, but only one thing gnawed at my willing suspension of disbelief, and that was why the old queen (who didn't seem old enough to retire yet) was so willing and eager to turn over her reign to a stranger. Of course, it was necessary for the character development of the Makai Queen's lead character, Tessa, but it felt forced, so I never really liked the old queen, Hiiaka. Since she was a main character, that was harder for me.

The ages of the characters were quite ambiguous, but Tessa is presumably old enough to marry, so...I would think anyone teen and up would enjoy this book if they like uplifting, exotic, exciting, romantic, action-packed reads. That said, as long as a kid doesn't scare easily about sharks, etc., the readers could go even younger. There is no language or sensuality that would disturb a younger reader.

Definitely worth picking up, and I'd willingly try another book by this author.
