When we were traveling the Upper Peninsula of Michigan last summer, I picked up a book by Jim Harrison called The Way Home. He had recently passed away, and being from that area, his books were everywhere. I was hooked on the first page, but realized there was a book he had written before it, called Dalva. So I put The Way Home aside, and purchased Dalva - so glad I did. This writer is so complex, so poetic and so interesting that you need to give it a long, slow read to really enjoy it. The family and other characters are so memorable, the terrain and lifestyles so clear that you will remember this story and these people long after you lay it down. Then read The Way Home. Dalva is Jim Harrison and Jim Harrison is Dalva. With "Dalva" Jim Harrison has written THE Great American Novel. It is a sad commentary on the current state of American Literature, that Jim Harrison may not be recognized as the Greatest American Writer of the 20th Century, until after his passing. "Dalva" brings everything full circle - America's roots of genocide, the soul's relation to the living earth, and patriarchy's misguided attempt to understand the universe through the mind rather than the heart. Jim Harrison has both immorality and immortality in him, and we are all blessed to participate in his living works of art.
At first I thought the protagonist was mad, stark raving mad, as the book opens with what seems like lunatic ravings. By the end I felt like she could have been my best friend. I enjoyed the flash backs to a place and time I really knew nothing about before reading this book. I enjoyed the multi-dimensional characters, and I enjoyed how the deep dark secrets were revealed little by little. The characters are flawed individuals, but aren't we all.
Brilliant writing and in depth characterizations by a political ideologue. Harrison landscapes beautifully. He creates larger than life mythical characters. if one is smart enough and politically correct, or tough and brave enough they are entitled to determine the terms of their morality. The character Dalva, an honestly concerned activist, is hard not to like. At the same time, Jim Harrison was a sanctimonious individual, and this personal trait was evident in his work. In terms of novelistic skill, Harrison was among the very best writers of his generation. Harrison was a writer's writer.
This book is a slow read full of many pearls of wisdom. When I finished it, I immediately started reading it over from the beginning. There was so much to think about.........."each of us must live with a full measure of loneliness that is inescapable, and we must not ..................." Personally, I think that there was too much going on and I had a hard time following everything. I was interested in Dalva's story and I would have preferred that the part of this book where the professor is gathering and writing about the history of her grandfather had been a separate book.
I found this a well-written novel which explores a variety of issues living with a multi-generation family history, dysfunctional people and their relationships, the treatment of the Sioux in the 19th and 20th centuries, alcoholism, and lost love. The setting is primarily in the northern part of Nebraska, near the Niobrara River, and the descriptions of the land and its people are magnificent. I started to read it, in fact, because of the Nebraska connection, but kept with it for the riveting story as it unfolded.
Hard to believe a man wrote this, my wife said, as I started the novel that had been kicking around my for years. Harrison tells the story of a young woman raised in privledge who manages to make her life interesting with a baby at 16. Events, evolutions and revelations commence as we see Dalva as a young girl, a young woman and then a middle aged woman who, quite frankly, knows her way around the world and can take men on as she needs them. A nice ambitious ending waited for my, all too soon, arrival. Lovely read.
My favorite among the many wonderful Jim Harrison books. So many layers of story you get swept away. The sadness of the Northridge family history of trying to keep the native genocide from happening, failing in the end. And the personal story of Dalva and her search for her on!y son. A winner on all counts.....
